“We should shoot these politicians…” , one of my friends was fuming. The topic of discussion was the recent Mumbai terror attacks. Point taken. If not to shoot them down, I would definitely stand in line which has gathered to question the accountability of maha idiots of Indian ecosystem. But there is something beyond pointing fingers; There is you. There is me. There is us. (Hereon, Us/You/Your too refers to any individual who proudly or otherwise identifies him/herself as being an Indian)
Fortunately or unfortunately, I was at home (on leave) and happen to watch the entire incident on numerous news channels which, for a change, wished that entire incident ended with as less damage as possible. Subsequently, we all saw the videos released by Mumbai police too. The visual footages were clear indicators that the terrorists did not care too much about the innocent people and their lives. All they did was to fire; round after round, second after second, life after life.
For a moment and more though, I saw no difference between those terrorists and myself; Do I care about my people? Am I concerned about there lives and living? Do I respect them? Do I care about being Indian at all? Well, the answer is quiet obvious. Sadly, you and I know it too.
The lady is slowly crumbling. We have left her no choice. I guess she has seen 60-odd worst years in her life since independence. May be its time to pay her dues. If you want to change her, change yourself. YOU be that one change you want to see. It could be as simple as paying your taxes, following traffic rules, quit smoking (smokers excuse), working with honesty, and more importantly, respecting your fellow countrymen … (Ah, Voting can wait. I personally feel we have a long way to go before we are qualified enough to vote). I am not saying these small things will revolutionize things over night. But it can be first steps. And yes. One of these could as well be your new year resolution!. Hopefully this time, it will breathe a little longer. Happy New Year.
Cheers!, Indresh
